The Orthotics Profession
The orthotics profession specializes in the design, fabrication and fitting of orthoses (or orthopaedic appliances). A Certified Orthotist performs clinical evaluations and custom-designs corrective solutions for patients who have been prescribed an orthopaedic treatment due to conditions involving muscle and/or bone impairment, disease or deformity. Some examples of common orthoses are custom foot orthoses, knee braces, ankle-foot orthoses, upper extremity braces, hip, neck and spinal braces.
Why is it important to see a Certified Orthotist for my custom orthoses and orthotic care management?
Entrust your orthotic care to an experienced, professional, Canadian Board Certified Orthotist – one who will provide you with the highest quality in custom orthopaedic appliances and orthotic care management.
In order to become a Certified Orthotist, and to receive designation from the Canadian Board for Certification of Orthotics and Prosthetics (CBCPO), certified members of the Canadian Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (CAPO) receive a thorough education in orthotic clinical and technical theory and methods. A two-year, supervised clinical internship is a further requirement. This is followed by a national certification exam that demands the highest professional standards be met. Mandatory professional development and continuing requirements keep Certified Orthotists current with the latest research and technology available.

When OrthotiCare Clinics provides you with an orthotic appliance, we include your clinical assessment, the orthotic care/treatment to meet your unique needs, custom fitting and adjustments of your appliance(s), and a follow-up appointment period to ensure your optimum function, fit and comfort.
Your Assessment Appointment
At your assessment appointment, you will have the opportunity to ask questions regarding your orthopaedic condition and your orthotic treatment needs. Tim Miller, our Certified Orthotist, will record your relevant medical history and assess the stability, function and range of motion of the involved joints. The best options for your orthotic treatment plan will be determined and discussed with you.
When you come to your assessment appointment, please bring your physician’s prescription if you have one. You will be asked to complete a patient information and privacy consent form.
There is a fee for the assessment appointment, but this fee will usually be included within the fees for any orthopaedic device that the Certified Orthotist dispenses to you. At OrthotiCare Clinics, we also offer our patients an included follow-up appointment period, in order to ensure the optimum function, fit and comfort of each orthopaedic device that we dispense. Within the specified follow-up appointment period, you will not be charged an additional appointment fee.

OrthotiCare Clinics’ Custom Orthotics Process
Our On-site Custom Orthoses Fabrication Lab
We have an on-site custom orthoses fabrication lab, and a highly skilled Orthotic Technician, located at our Nanaimo Main Clinic. Our Certified Orthotist, Tim Miller, maximizes your function, fit and comfort by building in custom detail at every step of our process.
Meeting Your Unique Treatment Needs: Our 5 Step Custom Orthoses Process
Step 1. Assessment Appointment:
To determine the best possible orthotic treatment plan for each individual’s needs, a complete clinical assessment is performed, including medical history, diagnosis, prescription, measurements, functional and gait analyses, and patient/care team consultations as required.
Step 2. Casting, Measurement:
A custom plaster casting is made from the patient. Then, custom modifications are made to the patient’s cast and/or poured plaster mould. This ensures that the desired orthotic treatment outcomes will be achieved.
Step 3. Fabrication:
Our custom-designed orthopaedic appliances and custom foot orthoses are manufactured at our Nanaimo Main Clinic’s on-site fabrication lab, by our highly skilled Orthotic Technician. This allows us to fine-tune customization at every phase of our process. Raw materials and manufacturing methods are determined based on each patient’s individual orthotic treatment needs. Every orthopaedic appliance that we manufacture is optimized to ensure the highest quality treatment results for our patients.
Step 4. Fitting Appointment:
At each patient’s orthotic fitting and adjustment appointment, any required final adjustments are made to the custom orthopaedic device(s) so that the optimum function, fit and comfort are achieved. Our Certified Orthotist performs a final evaluation to ensure that the recommended orthotic treatment results are provided. With each device dispensed, our Certified Orthotist provides information about the expected adjustment period and the proper device donning, use and care.
Step 5. Included Follow-up Period:
A follow-up appointment period is always included, to be certain that of each of our patients receive their best possible comfort and orthotic treatment results. Further fine-tuning and adjustments can be made as a patient adapts to their custom orthopaedic device.
